Mastering the Basics: A Beginner's Guide to Foundation Grids
To be successful in the sport of agility, it is essential that your dog develops good jumping skills. Some dogs are natural and require very little education, others require more. As a dog ages, develops and matures, his needs will change. If you aren't doing jump grids your dog is missing out on these 5 key elements for successful jumping:
1. Core Strength & Muscle Development = well developed rear end muscles will result in more power from your dog, especially when jumping at full height.
2. Understanding & Confidence of Jumping Mechanics = being able to problem solve on the job when we are late with our cues and/or in our dogs' path obscuring his sight of the obstacle.
3. Weight-Shift = control of the body essential for collection not only in jumping but for agility skills such as tight turns, weave entries and stopped contacts.
4. Forward Focus = teaching our dogs to look ahead and towards the obstacle rather than at you.
5. Balance & Precision with Speed = being able to land centered in the gap between each jump and take off from the same spot he landed keeping his body under control.
In this four-week course we learn four different foundation jumping grids and exercises. The course introduces you to Set Point, Adjustable Stride Grid, Bend Grid and the Progressive Grid.
Your dog will improve his forward focus and handler independence, whilst learning to coordinate his footwork with confidence and precision especially when speed is added. These are all the elements essential to future jumping success.
