Trust the Training, Trust the Partnership

Dog agility has a way of teaching us lessons far beyond the obstacles in the ring.

Lately, I've found myself feeling less confident in my handling. Carrying a couple of injuries and some extra weight, I've caught myself worrying that I can't get where I need to be on course. Those thoughts creep in before a run, and before I know it, I'm rushing, chasing positions, and trying to make things happen instead of trusting the training I've put in.

The reality is that when confidence drops, it's easy to focus on what we can't do. But I've started to realize that sometimes it's not about my limitations at all. Sometimes it's about identifying gaps in my training, finding better solutions, and learning how to handle challenges more effectively.

One of the biggest changes has been working on my mindset.

When I step up to the line determined to work every obstacle, commit to every cue, and be the best partner I can be for my dog, everything changes. Instead of worrying about where I can't get, I focus on what I can do. Instead of running with doubt, I run with intention.

And our dogs notice.

They feel our confidence. They respond to our commitment. When we trust our training and handle with conviction, that confidence transfers directly to them. They run faster, drive harder, and commit more fully because they trust the information we're giving them.

Being the best partner for your dog isn't about being the fastest handler or having the perfect run. It's about showing up, adapting to the challenges in front of you, and giving your dog the confidence they need to succeed.

So if you've been doubting yourself lately, you're not alone. Keep training. Keep learning. Trust the work you've put in. And remember that your dog doesn't need a perfect handler—they just need a partner who believes in them and is willing to tackle every obstacle alongside them.
